WELCOME TO CSAMM
Brief History
The College of Surgeons of Malaysia was founded in November 1972 with a membership of twenty-three fellows and Tan Sri Dato' Dr Abdul Majid Ismail as its first President. This significant milestone has played a pivotal role in shaping history of surgery in Malaysia. The primary objective of the College is to maintain and promote the highest standards of surgical practice in the country.
In 1992, fellows of the College felt the need to extend their responsibility in the profession and through a resolution opted to merge with the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia. The merger was formalised on 16th December 1995.
The College represents the diverse interest of surgical specialties and actively promotes the art and science of the various surgical disciplines. It offers excellent services to its members and is actively engaged in training, supporting continuing professional development programmes, research and the promotion of quality patient care by developing good practice guidelines.
There is desire and enthusiasm among its fellows to see expansion of surgery in Malaysia parallels that of the best in the world.
Message from the President
It is refreshing to enter a home that had undergone renovation.
You immediately feel that sense of rejuvenation, orderliness and tidiness—fresh smell of paint, new cabinets, new features that you have long desired. It brings a sense of new beginnings.
At the back of our minds, we know it is the same structure and foundation that was laid 50 years ago. Lots of hard work, creativity and innovations by our predecessors. We are following their footsteps but every now and then we add something new.
It is fortunate to work with a bunch of committed councilors in the new CSAMM committee. Young and energetic with an abundance of fresh ideas. It is invigorating—a new breath of air, new environment, and renewed enthusiasm.
I like the metaphor of a garden because I enjoy watching the new sprouts grow, tender leaves unfold and fresh flowers bloom and along with it, an air of mystery, hope and renewal.
Our College website has been revamped! The contents are mostly the same but we hope the new site is better organized, streamlined and updated. Simplicity is our guiding principle, ensuring navigation is effortless.
Much of our achievements and milestones are owed to the efforts of our predecessors. We record our admiration and gratitude for what they have initiated and sustained. The history of our college is well documented, and we take pride in continuing the legacy.
Our educational courses remain successful thanks to the steadfast commitment, devotion and personal sacrifices of the directors, trainers and coordinators. We must ensure the College calendar stays updated so members can take advantage of the opportunities and meet important datelines.
There are many invaluable artefacts accumulated over the years and the Web Committee will continue to curate, refine and share.
We support green surgery. During our Annual Scientific Meeting 2025, we initiated the Kuching Declaration—a pledge for sustainable surgery—a vision we shared with colleagues from ASEAN countries. This pledge will feature prominently in our website, as a lasting reminder.
More importantly, this website is for the members to communicate, stay informed and enjoy. Your continued support will ensure its richness, diversity and sustainability.
We encourage you to share your thoughts and provide feedback so we can better represent and serve you.
Best wishes,
Professor Dr Liew Ngoh Chin
President
